Rochelle Canteen is in an old school yard in Shoreditch, the school building itself seems to have been taken over by New Media hipsters and their design businesses. It was a really beautiful day in London so it was fantastic sitting outside in the yard soaking up the sun surrounded by East Londoners.
The starter of Queen Scallops with Lemon & Garlic was simple and tasty, queen scallops are quite small, the oil spread on top was great especially after a kick of fresh lemon was added.
Our other starter was the Pork Belly mixed in with leaves, capers and a sweet mustard dressing (I think it was sweet mustard), this was nice but the belly should have been a little more crispy on the fatty top.
For a main I had the Chicken, Roast Tomato & Gem Lettuce, roasted chicken shredded in large pieces, mixed with the lettuce, tomatoes and thick salsa verde as a dressing. The chicken was cooked wonderfully but I think this would have been a little better with the dark meat.
My companion had the Grilled Lamb Leg, Chickpeas & Flat Bread, quiet nicely done and tender from what I tried.
The service at Rochelle Canteen was a little sketchy, our waiter seemed to have a few hipster buddies about who he enjoyed and even smiled at. We unfortunately were left with blank indifference. The Kiwi waitress that offered us dessert was very lovely and seemed to embrace the menu and the good vibes.
